What to expect during your lactation consultation

  • This includes assessing latch, milk transfer, and for in home consultations, a pre and post feeding weight. For babies feeding with bottles, their behavior and feeding mechanics/patterns will be assessed.

  • This is dependent upon the nature of the consult, but the assessment includes assessing the breasts and chest, mental health screening, oral examination of baby to assess function and for the presence of oral restrictions (tongue, lip, and cheek ties), and infant reflexes.

  • This includes any relevant assessment findings, recommendations, and educational resources to help you navigate the concern that you have. This is collaborative effort between me and your family. Referrals to any applicable providers along with a written report is also included.

  • You will be given clear guidance on when and how to follow up with me to monitor your progress, ask any quick questions you may have, or adjusting the care plan, as needed.

Signs feeding may need support and what I can help with:

  • painful breastfeeding beyond the first few days

  • baby feeding every hour but still hungry

  • newborn is falling asleep at the breast quickly

  • latch looks fine but nipples hurt

  • clicking or leaking milk while feeding

  • feeds last longer than 40 minutes most feedings

  • baby not back to birth weight by 2 weeks

  • slow weight gain at pediatrician visits

  • told to supplement but unsure how much

  • pumping output much lower than expected

  • flange causes red ring at base of nipple, nipple swelling, or pain

  • baby refuses bottle at 6 to 12 weeks

  • sudden breastfeeding refusal or fussing

  • oversupply, choking, or coughing at breast

  • frequent clogged ducts or breast pain/engorgement

  • preparing to return to work and unsure of a schedule

  • unsure if milk supply is normal

  • wanting a breastfeeding plan before delivery

  • you just want reassurance about how feeding is going

Lactation Care Is Often Fully Covered By Insurance

Many families that book with me are able to receive lactation care for zero or low cost through their insurance.

Some insurance companies require you to pay out of pocket and seek reimbursement. A superbill will be provided to you to submit to your insurance. Many insurance companies reimburse in full for lactation care.
